Located in the south of the United States bordering the Gulf of Mexico and Mexico itself, Texas is sort of a hotspot for traveling right now. This state is a host for multiple major cities and plenty of tourist spots to hit. This guide will take you through the best 6 spots in Texas: Dallas, Waco, Austin, Fredericksburg, San Antonio, and Houston.

Dallas, Texas

This Texas Road Trip starts in the bustling city of Dallas, Texas, but of course, you are more than welcome to start it at whichever point is most convenient for you. My favorite place to visit was the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. It was an absolutely beautiful visit and great place to relax and spend the day.

Below are other tourist options while visiting Dallas. You won’t have a shortage of things do in the city.

Keep your eyes out late March through early April for Bluebonnet season, Texas’ state flower. Just 30 minutes south of Dallas is Ennis, Texas, the location of the “Official Bluebonnet Trail” and home of the Ennis Bluebonnet Trails Festival.

Waco, Texas

Leaving from Dallas the next location is only about an hour and a half drive south. In the heart of Texas this town is now a hot spot on a Texas Road Trip thanks to HGTV’s Chip & Joanna Gaines and their Magnolia Market. But, that is not all Waco has to offer. Take a tour of the Dr. Pepper Museum, stroll over Waco’s Suspension Bridge, or visit Texas Ranger Hall of Fame & Museum.

Austin, Texas

After Waco, your next stop is a little shy of a two hour drive. The capital of Texas, Austin is known for its amazing food, live music venues, and of course its weirdness, making it a must visit location while touring your way around the great state of Texas.

Don’t forget to eat tons of BBQ, relax at one of the many parks along the river, and visit the endless amounts of murals around the city.

One of my favorite things to do in Austin was hiking up Mount Bonnell, aka Covert Park. It’s basically just a couple of stairs, but the views of Lake Austin. This is the perfect outdoors activity to enjoy a picnic with some great views.

Austin, Texas is extremely popular with no shortage of things to do here as well. Below are a couple of tours and adventures while staying in Austin.

Fredericksburg, Texas

Now for my favorite part of the trip! An hour and 15 minute drive west from the capital is the wine country of Texas, Fredericksburg. I didn’t even know a Wine Trail in the middle of Texas existed, but Highway 290 will blow your mind for any wine lovers out there. Lined with over 40 vineyards to visit, tour, and drink at, a stop in Fredericksburg, Texas is a must do on your Texas Road Trip.

Wanting to visit some wineries? Read more about wineries I had the opportunity to visit: Signor Vineyards and Grape Creek Vineyards. Wineries in Fredericksburg, Texas will give you all the details you need to plan your visit to Texas Wine Country.

Road tripping can be a lot of fun, but it can also be a nightmare if you aren’t properly prepared! Check out this Road Trip Essentials Guide before you begin this journey!

San Antonio, Texas

Sitting an hour south of Fredericksburg is our next location, San Antonio, Texas. Unfortunately, San Antonio got cut from our Texas Road Trip, but I can’t wait to visit and spend some time on the River Walk at the shops and cafes. The Alamo is also located in the city as well as Japanese Tea Gardens, and the Natural Bridge Caverns.

Houston, Texas

And finally, the biggest city in Texas, Houston! Houston is nearly a three hour drive from our previous location of San Antonio. There are many things to do in the city from the Houston Museum of Natural Science, Minute Maid Park, and Space Center Houston.

Can't get enough of road tripping through Texas?

No worries! Add this Southwest Road Trip to your road trip bucket list next! Drive through 4 different states, including Texas, 3 Route 66 Cities, and 3 National Parks! Don’t forget to cross those National Parks off your bucket list.

Texas is one of the biggest states in the United States which means there is A LOT to see! This road trips hits the best 6 stops on the Ultimate Texas Road Trip, but barley scratches the surface.  What city mentioned above is or would be your favorite to visit? Leave it in the comments below!
